Hey y’all!
Hope you’re having a good Friday! My intention was to send these emails out on Friday mornings but here I am on Friday evening. I’m definitely one of those people that will use all the time they have for a project and send something out like 10 minutes before the deadline.
This week’s font is a revival that I had been wanting to do for a while. I found an old book in a San Francisco bookstore a long time ago that used an interesting typeface for the dedication page (shown below). It was completely different from everything else in the book but there was something rhythmic about it. I started designing it before finding the full specimen and when I did finally find it, I didn’t like it.
The original (Hermann Ihlenburg’s Isabella from 1892) was very art nouveau-esque and the letters that I had felt a lot more psychedelic. I decided to keep going down the route that I had started. The beauty of this project is that I don’t really have time to overthink anything. I had to go with my gut. So this is kind of a revival turned original-ish. I based it all off of the n. I really loved the form and the concave stems. It feels very calligraphic while also breaking the rules.
Without further ado, here it is. It’s a full set of lowercase with a period and a comma. I saw two different routes I could go with the caps — a simple, pinched stem route or a really wild psychedelic route. I obviously wanted to go the weirder, psychedelic route but in an effort to keep the quality as high as possible, I focused only on the lowercase this week.
There are still some things I would like to change but I’m reaching the point with this font where I’m about to get really nit picky and so it’s the perfect time to pass it off to you. That’s my intention with this project — get the idea out, make it presentable, and hand it off. Maybe I’ll come back to this with fresh eyes later in the year and give y’all a full characterset.

See you next week!

P.s. — The font is named after my partner. It was his birthday yesterday so this one is dedicated to him.
