This email is quite long and may get cut off — please click here to read the whole thing. I recommend viewing on desktop for optimal sketchbook viewing.
Hello!
How are you (my favorite people) doing?? Are we all taking life second by second? Because that’s definitely where I’m at! The US economy is crumbling but yet I am still here with my dumb letters like what else am I going to do??
Fortunately for us, today’s email is not about anything big or scary but actually something quite small, and hopefully nice to look at!
Last week, I asked my friends and colleagues to share their sketches with us so we can all aspire to be as good as them! However, I did get a few messages asking to see my sketchbook as well, and I am nothing if not a people pleaser!!
So here it is! The good, the meh, and the kinda clunky. It still has a long way to go but it’s good to show progress. It feels more honest!
Recently, I made it to the halfway point in my sketchbook which felt like a very serendipitous time to share it! This way, in the future, I can follow up with the second half.
My process with sketching is very ~feelings and vibes~ based! I don’t put pressure on myself to draw letters or truly anything specific. I try to start each workday by doing a spread. It feels good to have a small part of my day exist outside of the computer! I am not always good at doing it regularly but the point is for it to feel good, not like a chore.
You’ll notice that I like to use lots of color, draw flowers, and make collages. These are the things that feel natural for me and I usually do them on days when I want to make something easy. Other days, I might draw something more challenging — like a spread of lettering or maybe a scene in nature. There are no rules! It’s just for fun! That’s the vibe.
Here’s 44 whole spreads of my sketchbook — enjoy! And if you think it’s the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen, please don’t tell me!
The next 11 spreads are from Cyrus Highsmith’s drawing workshop at Letrástica last fall. If you ever get the chance to take one of his workshops, I highly recommend it!
There you have it!!
Lyl,
Libbie
