Happy Friday y’all!
I am here with the first bi-weekly update post 52 Fonts Project. I thought it might be fun to start giving foundry updates on a regular basis. First and foremost, I was recently interviewed by the folks at The League Of Moveable Type, on their podcast The Weekly Typographic. It was so fun to be interviewed by Olivia! I loved chatting about the 52 Fonts Project and the future of Type Du Nord. Check it out!
Now that my yearlong project has ended, it’s time to get down to business!! I need to make this a fully functioning type foundry with fully developed type families and a place to sell them. Part of the reason I am sending email updates is to hold myself accountable! I miss the accountability this newsletter has brought me in the past so I am leaning on it once again. <3
One of the major projects I have been tinkering with is the website. I am starting my first iteration of typedunord.com on Cargo Collective. Remember that site that everyone would make their portfolio sites on? Well for some reason, they’re the only diy ecommerce site that allows for variations on digital products. This is necessary for having different licensing options (desktop, web, etc). I am still getting the hang of it but I am going for a gridded layout. It’s pretty basic but it seems like a good starting point. I included a quick illustrator sketch of my vision!! We’ll see how much it changes from this sketch to when it’s finally done.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about Weightless. It’s the monospace from Week 50! It came in handy while making the zine because it was my only text weight font that has a decent amount of punctuation. So as I was being forced to use it, I grew to love it and wished it had more weights and an italic style. I have started to sketch some ideas for an italic (shown above). It’s not exactly the font I thought I would start with but here we are!!
These are the fonts I am going to focus on in the immediate future: Weightless, Lavandula, Knotical, Drench, and Mr Rightside. Some of these names might change but these are the ones I have continued to be excited about. Are there any others y’all think deserve a full family and official release?? I want to know!!
5 Things I’m Into Lately:
The song, Long Haired Lady by Paul & Linda McCartney.
The book, All About Love by Bell Hooks. I have to pause to cry while reading this!! It’s such an emotional read.
We’ve been grilling a lot this summer! As someone who doesn’t eat meat, I’ve discovered you can marinate and grill cauliflower like a steak and it’s so good!!
The show, Hacks on HBO. It’s one of the most genuinely funny comedies I’ve watched in a long time.
Enjoying the rest of the summer weather while it lasts.
Talk soon!
