Happy Friday y’all!!
Guess who actually opened a glyphs file for once??? I’ve truly been Queen of Procrasti Nation with fonts lately! I have so many faves and they all require so much work to be ready for release.
For this update installment, I worked on Backflip again! It will definitely be one of the first fonts I release. I think I’ve been avoiding it because it feels so unfun and normal… but it truly scratched an itch in my brain that I can’t describe. I began with some hefty proofs to get reacquainted with Backflip. If you recall, it has bold, light, and light italic styles. I also released a monospace version of it but I am back-burnering that. For now, I am prioritizing the current styles plus a future text weight.
First and foremost, spacing for this guy was in shambles across the board!! It’s crazy how much slips by you when you design something in one week. With fresh eyes, it was leagues easier to get this into a good spot. The spacing strings made me realize that the light styles have super long serifs and some wonky proportions, to say nothing of the uneven stroke weight. I tried not to let those details bother me while I get the spacing in the right spot.
The second step was fixing the rounded and angled capitals — B, P, R, W, V, X, Y, Z. The curved bits on the original B, P, and R were cute but ultimately unnecessary and looked sloppy. I tamed them to be flatter on top and bottom and brought the width in a bit. The angles of W, V, X, Y, and Z, feel better with the stroke width evened out. Is it too boring now though?? Be honest!
Here they are in use:
In other foundry-progress news, I finally made the first step in getting some legit font licenses. I was truly intimidated by this whole process but I am going to do it with a couple type designer friends who also want similar licenses. Do scary things with supportive friends!! It really helps! Whatever the specifics end up being, my goal is to have licenses that are not fussy or confusing. More to come!
Don’t ask me about my website… Here are 5 things I’m Into Right Now:
We all are probably aware that I love making playlists/sharing music so of course I made a lil halloween playlist for ya! It’s mostly spooky 80’s vibes. <3
What are y’all going to be for halloween?? Alex and I are going to be clowns this year. Cute vintage clowns, don’t worry!! I am finishing the costumes this weekend! I am very stoked!!
This is very tech-bro of me but I tried out Asana recently to manage all my projects and I’ve been digging it. I like the different ways to view your lists and that it has a phone app. I’ll probs use it for three months and then move on to the next one like I always do tho!!
On a lil visit to the Japantown mall in SF with Taters queen, Tommi Sharp, I bought one of these pens with custom ink colors. It’s been so much fun to use for proofs!!
I finished a sweater recently that I love! Here’s a pic:
Luv u,
