Happy Friday y’all!
I have a fun update for you today — more Socko (if you can even believe it)! It turns out that *real* typefaces take a long time!!
Recently, I thought that Socko might need a lowercase so I gave it a whirl. It’s honestly really cute. I was half expecting it to feel forced because it’s such a weird style. But I’m into it!!
The plan is the flesh out the lowercase and add an italic style. The italic will likely feel scripty, but there won’t be deliberate connections like a traditional connected script has. I can picture Socko being used for a small fashion brand or some cute little ice cream shop branding.
In case you hadn’t suspected this, Socko will be released soon. It wasn’t the typeface I expected to release first but the universe works in mysterious ways!! Socko feels very on brand though so I’m definitely not mad about it. It’s genuinely fun to work on!
I would like to remind you that next Friday, March 24th, I am giving a lecture through Type Electives! It will be at 1-2pm EST. I will be discussing my journey from type design student to type designer. The talk will include a lot of tidbits about the 52 Fonts project, what’s next for me and TDN, and some insights from teaching my first class. I try to be as open as I can so please bring your burning type questions and I will give you an honest answer! Sign up for free here. <3
RaNdOm: I made a condensed version (aka I stretched it) of Pulp for our save the dates/wedding things and I think I like it more than the original?
5 Things I’m Into Right Now
My too-cool-for-school friend, John, made a skate video featuring my extremely handsome and incredibly smart partner, Alex, and other 2C4S friend, Corey. Watch it here!
Another 2C4S friend, Kel Troughton, started his own foundry, Overlap Type. Check it out!! He’s also on Future Fonts!
I made this tamale pie recently and it was really good!
I’m still on my fantasy shit! I finished the Discovery of Witches series (by Deborah Harkness) and I enjoyed it but it was less riveting as ACOTAR and Outlander. I am getting sick of the hot headstrong woman (who is unknowingly super powerful) meets hot mysterious man (who we later find out is super wealthy) and together they save the world plot line. If anyone has recs with more diverse plots, send them!!
Lately, I have been in a music rut so I have been listening to the artist of my youth: Minnesota rapper, Atmosphere. I’m feeling angsty — don’t judge!!
U R 2C4S,
Libbie
