Happy Friday y’all!!
It’s been one giant minute since I have sent an update — I have so much to tell you!!
Firstly, I am teaching not one, but TWO classes through Type Electives this summer. My spring Crash Course In Type Design was so fun and special that we decided to have two versions this summer.
The first section is the same as the spring one! It will be on Monday nights (6-8pm EST) for five weeks. We will go through the whole process of creating an original typeface concept — from sketching to presenting your final design. The goal is to create capital letters A-Z but some students were able to go beyond that!
The second section will be on Tuesday evenings (6-8pm EST) and I will guide you through the process of reviving type from the past. This class will be a really amazing way to learn all the technical aspects of type design without the pressure of creating an original concept. As a type design student, I started with a revival design and it’s one of the best ways to learn.
If you’re interested in either, all the info can be found on typeelectives.com! My spring class filled up fast and the waitlist became very long(!!), so sign up soon to claim your spot. <3
Lastly, I have a lil Socko update for ya! I am working on the italic now and it’s so retro! The lowercase is feeling more like a connected script than I intended but I really wanted to utilize italic forms (single story a, exit strokes, etc) instead of just leaning the regular letters.
I’m about halfway through the lowercase right now and it is admittedly very challenging. The exit strokes need to look good and connect to any letters after them but then also still read well when they are at the end of a word. Some letters also feel like they lean more than others. All very classic italic problems!!
The caps are mostly slanted versions of the regular style. They’re still a bit rough and I am going to go through and round out some of the straighter spots as the italic lowercase doesn’t have a lot of straight lines.
I am loving the process tho! Finally finishing a font feels like an amazing feat after spending a whole year in the concepting phase! Anyways, Socko’s release date will be announced very soon. <3
5 Things I’ve Been Into Lately
I have to mention my friend Kel Troughton’s class through Type Electives! It’s called Graffiti Concepts for Type People and it looks so fun. High school Libbie drew “graffiti” in all her notebooks and could’ve probably used a course like this!!
I also finally started my newsletter + instagram page for Libbie’s Lab! Check them out if you want to hear me blab about knitting and making my own clothes. <3
I went to Portland, ME for a trip last weekend and it was so fun. The food scene there is incredible!! Highly recommend!
I bought these pens (called Le Pen) at my local art store recently and I love them! The colors are great and they somehow make my handwriting better.
I am still firmly in a nostalgia phase and I made a playlist of all the music that I remember from childhood. Mostly what my mom would listen to in the car when we went to go pick up my sisters. Enjoy!!
Talk 2 u soon,
Libbie
