Happy Friday!
I’m coming at you with another expansion of an existing font. I am starting to think about which fonts will be long term projects and revisiting the ones that have potential! I’ve always liked the vibe of Mort so I thought it would be interesting to see how it can become a variable font.
It’s been in the plan for Mort to have a lighter weight but I wanted to add a weird axis as well. Rotated fonts are fun and seem really simple in theory but boy is it more complicated than I thought! Spacing a rotated font is messy business. Round and square letters sometimes don’t feel like they’re rotated the same amount. Making it feel like it has a consistent baseline is difficult as well. A lot of letters felt like they were bouncing up and down before I made adjustments. Took a lot of tinkering but we made it!
I’m not totally sure what the use is for a rotated letters but they kind of feel like a typographic eye roll. It adds some playful drama. Anyways, have fun with this one! I have really wild ideas for the next couple weeks… Stay tuned!!
5 things I’m into this week:
Going on Twitter after a long hiatus only to back away slowly after this news.
The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber. A book that was recommended to me by Graham Bradley (of Roxaboxen). I was overwhelmed by the idea of reading a business book but I am 75% of the way through and it’s already helped a lot! I highly recommend it if you’re thinking about going freelance/starting a business.
I watched this Ken Barber talk randomly and it was worth it.
The Proof&Co newsletter that is a nice and concise way to stay up to date on type news.
A recent obsession with the show Friday Night Lights. I know I’m like 15 years behind on this one.
