TGIF babyyyyy!!
Apparently I really needed a palette cleanser after making a blackletter last week! I don’t know why I love them so much, but dingbats are the best. Maybe I’m done with actual letters??? Jk never… but maybe?
Doodly dingbats have been on the list for nearly a millennia at this point. I always thought it would be really fun to add a “hand written” tool to my arsenal. When designing these, I made sure to include multiple size options for each kind of doodle. No dinky doodles here. In terms of my process, I sketched these with my Wacom tablet using the pencil tool in illustrator. I then moved the path over to glyphs. It’s easier for me to edit the paths in Glyphs now so I refined them and resized there. Then added a stroke so they would all be uniform. I am sure I could’ve used the pencil tool in Glyphs but I felt like it was helpful to see them all on one artboard.
In the end, there are 52 little doodle shapes for you to use at your leisure. When a design is feeling a little flat or stale, adding these would definitely help! I picture these being used to jazz up boring IG posts, make fake cosmo quizzes, designing a fun powerpoint for once, and maybe to add to a resume for a grade school teacher?? Regardless, I hope you have as much fun using them as I had making them. Thanks for being supportive of my reckless dingbat ways!!
Some tips for using Squiggees:
Open the glyphs palette to see the whole characterset at once and pick the shapes you want to use
Pick a handful of characters that pair well together and repeat them randomly to make an interesting pattern!
Use the shapes on their own to add a little decoration to your work
Refer to the included reference PNG to match the shape to the character
5 things I’m into this week:
TypeWknd is happening now and continuing all weekend! Find the schedule here: https://2021.typewknd.com/
Type Supply’s new R&D Department for in progress fonts. I might do something similar after I wrap up this project… 🤔
This week was made possible by my Wacom Tablet. Idk why I don’t use it more but I might have to start! Does anyone here use a Wacom instead of a mouse??
Don’t judge but I burned straight through the first season of Real Housewives: SLC. I discovered that I might like reality tv???
I’m on a knitting tear lately!! I don’t want to brag but I finished a beaded sweater recently and have been wearing it nonstop.
See you next week!!
