Hi y’all!
I brought Backflip back! My plan for this week was to make a monospace. I wanted to design one that felt less mechanical than the versions we typically see.
Before I decided to use Backflip, I was working on a different monospace. It was clear that since I have never designed one before, that this was going to be a challenge. The thing with this kind of font is that you’re battling spacing in an unusual way, so working on the design in tandem is very tricky. After a lot of tinkering and pure frustration, I realized that I probably wouldn’t finish an original monospace in one week. It’s very easy to get stuck on the design because parts of it have to be ugly in order to make the spacing work. I remembered that during the Type West program, whenever monospace was brought up, the instructors would always tell us to make the regular version first. That did not resonated with me until now.
After panicking about my original plan, I realized that I could just use one of the previous designs and translate it into a monospace (aka taking my TypeWest instructors’ advice). So in comes Backflip! It has just enough personality to not give off boring coding vibes and is a 52 Fonts fave. In the end, working on this was way smoother. I feel like I actually learned how to make a monospace instead of spending the week ripping my hair out.
I truly do like where this ended up. I like that it rides the line of display and text. I picture this being used on a lot of things but if anyone uses it for a scene in a movie where there’s a hacker using a computer and the screen is just green with random code, I will die happy!!!
Lastly, I’m forgoing the “5 Things I’m Into” to inform you that something fun is happening next week! Since we’re coming up on the halfway point of this project, I want us to celebrate Week 26 together! I will need your help to plan the design. Starting Monday, we’ll be planning a typecooker together. Each day, on my instagram stories we will go through a part of the typecooker recipe together and you can vote on each parameter. Whatever results come out of this at the end of Week 25 will guide the design I work on for Week 26! So if you want in on this, follow @typedunord and check my stories on Monday!!
Talk soon!
