Happy Friday!!
It’s a holiday week in the US, so I decided to expand Knotical (from week 8)! My goal for this font is to become a staple/brand font for Type Du Nord and so I did soooo much testing and proofing this week. I want it to be flawless!!
The tricky thing about sans is that there’s no where to hide. Usually with serifs or unconventional forms, you don’t notice the little things. I slightly loathe making them because of it. On the flip side, I always learn so much and find solutions that I normally wouldn’t have.
On Monday, I started with some adjustments to the caps. There were some weight issues I didn’t see the first time. I also didn’t like the way the leg from R and K branched out from the stem. My first pass at this lowercase was hilariously bad but we all have to start somewhere!! I made edits and proofs where I could but ultimately had friend and type queen, Tommi Sharp, look at it with me. It always helps to have another set of eyes, especially with a sans. After we figured out the obvious problems, it was just small kinks that needed to be worked out.
I’m pretty stoked on the second version of Knotical. It’s a little old school and a little mechanical, but I dig it. Its intention was the be mostly for text but also flexible enough to use in headlines and display settings. I unfortunately didn’t have time to make numbers so that will have to be saved for later. In terms of use, this would be cute for some coffee branding or a sign that an airplane drags behind it. I hope you all have a really restful weekend! You deserve it. <3
5 Things I’m Into This Week:
Tons of type foundries are doing sales this weekend! I can’t possibly list them all but if there was ever a time to support the little guys, it’s now.
Watching the original Jurassic Park trilogy! I’d be lying if I said I could sleep after…
I discovered Shitty Craft Club on TikTok this week. I am going to go ham on some shitty holiday decor now. Or just bedazzled home decor in general.
This not disgusting take on Green Bean Casserole that my partner, Alex, made yesterday. He also added a tsp of soy sauce and used gluten free flour.
The song Motorcycle by Liz Cooper. <3
