Happy last day of 2021!! What a wild year it’s been.
For me personally, I’ve had a big year. I graduated from Type West at the beginning of the year, began TAing for the current TW class, quit my job, and then decided to make a font a week for 52 weeks. 36 fonts so far and 16 to go! Besides all that, I’ve been freelancing and knitting to my little heart’s desire. Don’t get me wrong, there have been hard times too but I like focusing on the positives.
This week, I brought back Drench for another round. It’s one of my faves and I wanted to end the year on a high note. The rules are pretty simple for Drench — make the serifs extra long where possible and add some weight to the serifs. It creates a reverse contrast vibe that looks like the ink is pooling in the serifs. The lowercase doesn’t have as many opportunities for funky serifs, so I tried to keep the aperture of this font really small. When we talk about the aperture of a font, it’s describing how open or closed off the forms are. If you look at lowercase c or e, you’ll see that the tail comes up to the serif or counter on the top half. That’s how I carried the feeling of long serifs into the lowercase.
In the end, this is still one of my faves — even though the g isn’t quite resolved!! To me, it feels editorial and dramatic. I love when a font feels fashionable. I could see this being used for a fashion mag, personal stylist’s branding, or swanky restaurant menu. I might bring this back for a third round and do an italic version?? That could be interesting!
Thanks for being here this year! You’re all the best and I love having you along for the ride. There are somehow over 1400 of you now and that blows my mind!! I could honestly cry if I thought about it for too long. <3
5 Intentions for 2022
Continue to embrace analog practices. I have plans to experiment with calligraphy, brush making, and collaging.
Find more ways to share my type design knowledge. My TA gig just ended and I’m already having school withdrawals!
Make a home for Type Du Nord (aka build my foundry website)!!
Incorporate music into my daily practice more often. Whenever I’m finding and listening to good music, my work gets better. It’s like magic.
Try not to take it all so seriously.
HNY!!
