Week 42: Ms Sherwood
If Barbie had a typewriter!!
Hey y’all —
I’m back! I usually say happy Friday but I’m sure none of us are in the mood for that. It’s honestly too intense of a week to talk about type but I’m sure a lot of us could use a distraction.
This week, I made something a little ridiculous. I had an idea to design a condensed monospace italic that is overly girly (just for the hell of it). Something like if Barbie had a typewriter. I don’t really know where the idea came from — it just sounded fun. I drew a bunch of sketches but only the first (and shittiest) was giving off the vibe I wanted.
Designing a monospace font presents its own specific challenges. You have to pick a width that works for the widest and narrowest letters and space it in a way that doesn’t feel too irregular. Much like putting together a portfolio website, it’s the kind of problem you could wrestle with for millennium and still hate the outcome. For the punctuation, I decided to have a little fun and use mini dingbats. Of course I included regular alternates for those of us that would like to actually use this font.
It’s the kind of typeface that a mid-2000’s popular girl would use to write a school paper comparing Disney movies to Shakespeare. Obviously it would be printed on pink perfume-scented paper. For me personally, I’d use it for a menu at the Madonna Inn’s bar or to spice up a boring legal document. Either way, I hope this put a tiny crack of a smile on your face!!

We used this tiktok as inspiration for a vegetarian sushi bowl and it was delicious.
