Hello! Happy Friday y’all!
I am bringing you a little bit of a revival this week. It’s got Schoolhouse Rock meets That 70’s show energy. It’s bottom heavy and strategically bumps into itself. Named after every sock puppet in the universe, Socko would happily live on a tee shirt for a brewery or signage for a vintage shop!
Last weekend, I was looking through vintage knitting magazines (as one does) and I found this lettering hanging out above a sock pattern. It was absolutely perfect. I couldn’t not design it this week, ya know?
I began by digitally tracing the existing letters and then using them in other words to try to find the system within S-O-C-K. Outside of it having negative side bearings and round forms, it wasn’t clear how the other letters would look. I added a H in to see how straight sided letters need to be handled and to have my control characters (H,O) fleshed out. It became instantly clear that the top of the letters have to pinch a bit so that they’re distinguishable in a word or block of text. I had to use some alternate forms for T, Y, and E. F and P are a little wild on their own but some concessions needed to made for the top heavy forms to work in this setting.
In the end, I am pretty stoked on this one. It’s always tricky to make super organic/rounded fonts come to life within a 4-day turn around. I’m not sure if I’ve ever said this to y’all, but I don’t work on the weekends on this project. I send it out mid-day Friday — so that gives me about 4.5 days to make them. It’s kind of nuts to do this to myself but I’ve learned soooo much! I am a much faster drawer and decision maker because of it. I hope you enjoy these every week as I, shockingly, still enjoy making them. We only have 9 weeks to go. I can not believe it’s single digits already!! See you next week!
5 Things I’m Into This Week:
Finding an unprecedented amount of joy from getting ice cream from a local ice cream shop only to find out they have gluten free waffle cones and then giggling like a small child while eating it.
My new fave breakfast: Hash brown patty with avocado and an egg on top. Add a little Siracha and you’re good to go. Credit goes to my little sister for this one.
I’ve been in a wear-pajamas-every-day rut for a couple months and this week, I set the intention to get dressed every day. It is helping me more than I thought it would!
The Euphoria soundtrack for both seasons has been great to listen to on runs this week! Whoever picks the music for that show is really good at their job.
The song “It Never Rains in Southern California” by Albert Hammond. Fun to scream sing in the car. ;)
Until next time,
Libbie
