Happy Friday!!
We’ve made it to the finish line!! I have so many feelings — mainly relief and disbelief. It feels a little bit like graduating. Like, I did all this work and now it’s over and I actually have to make something of myself.
Life has been a little hectic for me lately and my idea bucket has runneth empty. Because of this, I decided to revisit one of my favorite fonts I’ve ever made. It’s part of the Lavandula fam from my Type West project. It’s a horizontal-stress connected script. It was never really finished because I started it halfway through the last term and only worked on it briefly.
The bulk of my updates were resolving some spacing issues, replacing a couple caps, filling in some missing characters, and adding some ligatures. There’s still about 5 years worth of work left on it. At least now it has a basic characterset and some ligatures to help with some of the pesky problem characters. I’m looking at you r & s!! The caps are a little wild but I remember that I wanted to go a funky route with them.
In the end, I’m glad I spent some more time on this font and didn’t force myself to come up with a new idea that I didn’t love. Sometimes you gotta read the room even if you’re the only one in it. I always thought this font would be great for a roller skating tee or something retro themed. Next week, I’m opening up the zine pre-order! It’s going to have lots of fun stuff in it. I’ll give you a little preview next week!! I love you all for being a part of this and I am going to spend the rest of my day crying!! <3
5 Things I’m Into This Week
I finally got a library card!! I forgot that libraries are a little slice of heaven. I’ve been reading a lot lately and don’t have the budget or space for tons of books. Plus I love cradling a worn out book with that crispy plastic cover on it. It feels like childhood.
On a similar note, I’ve been reading a couple Kurt Vonnegut books. They’re classics and I’m late to the party but I read Slaughterhouse Five in like two days. Now I’m reading Cat’s Cradle.
I’ve been into the song, Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman, after being reminded of its existence at a bar recently. I know it’s been around forever but it’s so good.
I’m taking a lot of respite in dancing lately. Turning on some tunes and jiggling my body all around the house has helped tremendously lately. It’s truly an underrated thing.
Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to work on this Beach Gothic typeface with amazing type designers, Graham Bradley (Roxaboxen Studio) & Chris Skillern (Tulsey Type)! Check it out here.
Godspeed,
Libbie
