Hey hey hey! It’s Friday!
This week’s font is based on blind contour drawing! While it’s not a true blind contour, it’s definitely inspired by the style of drawing. This was one of those ideas on my list that I could never visualize but I took a stab at it and it came together better than I thought!
The process was pretty straightforward. I sketched each letter to figure out where the visual weight and curves would be. I really wanted each letter to be a unique drawing (which means no copying and pasting :( ). This font was made possible because of the offset path (aka stroke) tool in Glyphs. After some trial and error, I learned that the tool works best if you have points on all the extremes and add extra points to any long segments/curves. Otherwise it glitches a bit and will add some weight in weird spots. This is honestly a great method for checking your curves because as soon as you add the stroke to them any blips you have will become unbearably prominent.
Yesterday, I put out a request on my Instagram post for name ideas and got so many great responses!! It was a tricky one to nail down. Ultimately, I decided to riff off of Kevin Barrett Kane’s (@kevin.barrett.kane) suggestion. He suggested Rightside because we learn blind contour drawing with the right side of our brain but I’m adding a Mr in front of it so it’s more like that one song from the Killers. We gotta keep it a little silly around here, right? The runners up were Lasso-Rated from Lauren Munro (@laurenmunrosalyers) and Undulator from Tiffany Wardle de Sousa (@typegirl). It was really fun to include everyone in the naming process!
See you next week!
