Welcome to my silly little newsletter with my silly little egg font!!
I have to admit that I was a little surprised at how many people responded to my post yesterday! I honestly thought this week was going to be a wash. Sometimes you just need a weird little palette cleanser after making a sans. Sans are just so intense and serious!!
The whole concept of an egg font came to me a couple months ago in that moment right before you drift to sleep. I had to shake myself awake so I could write it down. When I was skimming my list this week, I saw “egg font” and I did a quick google. I noticed that there was only a couple of egg fonts…? Now there’s at least three!
I really wanted Yolker to look like when you crack an egg over the pan and the egg white spreads out. I tried to keep the visual volume of the egg whites the same so that it would feel a little more consistent and realistic. I feel like there’s a lot of potential here for some fun styles — deviled, poached, scrambled, egg salad(!!!), etc. Yolker is toeing the legibility line a bit. The letters on their own are almost unrecognizable and require a full word for context. I’m really surprised that your brain can still read this even though there’s a yolk “counter” in each letter. I was really convinced it wasn’t going to work when I was digitizing it. Turns out our 40,000 year old noodles are good for something.
I’m picturing this on a diner’s breakfast menu, paired with Taters by (bffl) Tommi Sharp, or just as fun little egg illustrations!
Have an eggcellent weekend!
Libbie
P.s. — If you want to add color to the yolks in Illustrator: outline the text > ungroup > release compound path > select yokes and add color! <3
