52 Fonts is a year long type design project. Every Friday, I will be releasing a new font through this newsletter. They will be under a pay-what-you-want model and are for personal use only.
My intention with this project is for it to be a weekly test run for designing and releasing fonts. See, I just graduated from Type West and still feel like a newbie. One thing they don’t teach in type design school is how to get yourself to keep designing fonts after it’s over(!!!). So now I am on a journey to create fonts — a lot of ‘em — and all of you blessed readers are my accountability partners.
Until the end of April 2022, we’re going to be on a wild, scrappy ride together. Picture my email popping into your inbox with a cool dingbats font or a really weird variable font. That’s the vibe.
I want to note that I am not the first (and hopefully not last) to do this kind of a project. The Pyte Foundry is my inspiration. I am going to follow a lot of the same parameters. The fonts will be available for one week (the ol’ Snooze Ya Lose™ model) and they will be free (with an option to donate a little $) to keep this fun and experimental.
Unlike the Pyte Project, I won’t be committing to a specific characterset. I want to explore and complete concepts rather than focus on a full set of letters, numbers, and punctuation. For example, I might want to design a font for data visualization. In that case, I would only make numbers and appropriate punctuation. If there is a font that you’d like to be fully completed, let me know!
Finally, I’d just like to thank y’all for being here! I’m nervous to begin such a big project but I have a feeling it will be worth it in the end.
Follow along on Instagram for live updates. :)
See you next Friday!
