Teaching, goals, and egg tattoos <3
Happy Friday y’all!
I have something so exciting to share today. I get to cross one of my biggest goals off the list — teaching type design!
I’m sure some of you have seen Type Electives emerge recently. It’s a new type school founded by our beloveds, Lynne Yun and Juan Villanueva. And, as it happens, *yours truly* gets to teach a 5-week crash course in type design!!
It’s going to be a very fun and very rigorous course — learning the ins and outs of font making! As you might be aware, I am sort of a connoisseur in fast-paced type design and I’m so honored to share that knowledge with my future students.
If you have ever been interested in learning type design, this will be a great starter course or a nice follow up to any self taught knowledge you might have. The class is designed to be a little bit open so that each student can learn from where ever their current skill level is.
It is going to begin where it always should begin, with lots of ideating, sketching, and iterating. Followed by a whole class dedicated to drawing in type software. The last 3 classes will all have critiques, and learning about other tricks of the trade (like proofing and making specimens). I am hoping the environment is a collaborative one, with lots of discussions about our little niche industry and how to stay motivated outside of a learning environment (something I still struggle with!!).
Anyways, I hope to see you in class if you’re interested! I am so honored to be a part of an innovative school and with such an amazing group of instructors!! I could cry just thinking about it!!
I also wanted to take a second to revisit my list of goals I laid out in update 003. This will be my last email until mid-January so I will be thinking about my goals for next year!
Here they are (with some adjustments):
I will not be afraid to show my work. Still am but working on it.
I will have a fully functioning type foundry by the end of 2022. More like early 2023 — don’t hate me! Websites are hard!!
I will start teaching type design in 2023.Check!!I will have my first public speaking engagement by the end of 2023. Spooked by this but fingers crossed nonetheless!
I will find ways outside of institutions to educate and share my knowledge with others. Still percolating on this one!
I will create typefaces that are recognizable for the way they intersect art and functionality. A constant WIP, if you will.
My work will seen by a lot more people than I am comfortable with.
I will have fun with my work even if I have to be business-y about it. These last two are constants!!
Lastly, my url is finally not broken and there is a lil landing page for now! I am so anxious to get my foundry website off my to-do list, but I am not a web designer therefore it is slower going than I would like. More to come!!
5 Things I’m Into Right Now
My very hip friend, Danny, got a tattoo using Yolker!! I can’t even believe it. It says Egg Night which is a long story involving a bday party and a lot of eggs. But here it is:
Staying in the new year spirit, I will be filling out a Year Compass booklet this weekend. It’s a printable workbook that asks a lot of questions about the past year and the year ahead. I haven’t done this one but I have found that reflecting and setting goals each year is incredibly helpful. Oh it’s free btw!
I’m obsessed with my hot water bottle. I didn’t know how useful they are for staying warm but my friend, Rosalie, turned me on to them. I live in an old drafty house and it’s been a life saver!! I got this one in blue. It would be a great gift for your perpetually cold friends!
Alex and I recently watched all the hobbits and lord of the rings movies (extended editions, of course). It’s our thanksgiving time tradition (took a while to get through them). Idk why but they’re cozy movies okay!!
Business people would argue that I shouldn’t promote someone else’s class alongside mine, but my friend Kel is teaching another 10-week type design class if you prefer a longer one! OR go wild and do both!! I won’t tell!!
