Sup Type Nords <3
I have a secret to share with y’all today. I can finally tell you why I’ve been working on Socko lately!! I’m releasing it at the end of April or early May through Overlap Type. Overlap is a new foundry focusing on experimental typefaces that overlap in interesting ways. The foundry was started by Kel Troughton and will include a collection of his work and others that fit within OT’s really specific niche!
He asked me a few months ago if I wanted to include Socko in OT’s library. Socko wasn’t originally at the top of my list but it fits so perfectly in Kel’s foundry that I had to go for it! I always felt like it had a lot of potential after I made it for week 43 of the 52 Fonts project, and now we’ll get to see it come to fruition.
The current plan for Socko is to have the upright style that I’ve been working on and potentially and italic version. This week, I worked on some of the fun symbols as well as some numbers. Don’t hate my guts for not finishing the lowercase yet but I wanted to try some of the more complex characters next! I am glad I did because it’s starting to feel so real!!
I am really stoked about some of these symbols! Look at that section symbol(§) — if Socko ever gets used in a legal or professional enough setting to require a section or paragraph glyph, I’ll be sick with delight!! Some of these are in their awkward teenager phases and will require some development to come into their maturity. I’m specifically looking at the % and /. Apparently slanted blobbiness is tricky!! Hopefully it’s not a bad omen for the italic. We will see!! Time will tell!!
The sun came out this week so I made a little gif of my little sunny guy to celebrate.
Lastly, I gave Designing with Criticality and Love lecture last week. If you missed it, here is the recording! I had a really great time sharing my work and my journey into this crazy type world so far. Type Electives is so amazing and I’m so honored to be a part of it!!
5 Things I’m Into Right Now
Since I’m a fantasy fanatic now (I think it might be permanent), I am reading the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and I’m loving it. Highly recommend her books.
Don’t roll your eyes but I attempted to spin yarn this week. As if I need another yarn-based hobby!! It was challenging but fun. I watched this vid to learn!
I’ve been working out regularly again after lifting up my mattress gave me a charley horse in my bicep(!!). This video that my dear friend, Lauren, recommended has been a go-to lately.
I also watched the show, Shrinking (on AppleTV) and it was so good! Love a goofy but emotional show!
The song, Bim Bom by João Gilberto, that I heard on TikTok and has now been stuck in my head for days!!
TTYL,
Libbie
