Howdy!!
Happy September! It’s been one loooong minute since I’ve written an email update. It’s been a busy summer — I taught two classes(!), turned 30(!!), and got married(!!!). Suffice to say, I haven’t been in email-writing headspace for a few months.
To kick this email off, I am teaching the Crash Course In Type Design again this fall! If you’re looking for a fun, *not intimidating* way to learn the type design basics, this class is for you. It’s a quick 5-week deep dive into making fonts.
We will start with ideation (aka using found utensils + ink to make letters!), go through the ins n’ outs of Glyphs, and then we finish by designing a type specimen to share with the class. We will also have the most amazing TA, Jo Malinis!! It’s truly a great time!
The class will start on Monday, October 16th, and end on November 13th. It will be on Monday nights from 6-8pm EST with additional office hours. There is a scholarship available for this class — scroll to the bottom of the class page to apply. C u there!!
The final part of this update is that I am really itching to get my website fully up and running. The reason I haven’t is because I don’t have much of a library yet. Therefore, I have started working on Weightless (from Week 50 of the 52 Fonts Project).
It’s a selfish one to work on because it was definitely not my most popular font from the series — it’s one I personally gravitate towards while graphically designing. Weightless has the added benefit of being easy to work on because the system is already fully developed and pretty rigid. Therefore I don’t have to come up with crazy solutions for anything. It’s honestly been a really great way to get back in the saddle again.
My plan for Weightless is to keep it a simple 4-style family. Regular, Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic. The regular weight is almost done — just a few more diacritics to make and the pesky ampersand. I have some funky, futuristic ideas for the italic. Can’t wait to show you!
Lastly, these emails will be monthly from now on. I’ll shoot for the first Friday of each month. The only emails that will come outside of that cadence will be font release emails. <3
5 Things I’ve Been Into This Summer
I am still on my fantasy/romance shit! I read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and it was great. Can’t wait for book 2 to come out in November.
Alex and I went to the Beyoncé concert this week. I am a big fan of hers and she really knows how to turn a stadium show into a 50,000 person dance party!! A+++
I’ve been super into the Cranberries this summer and got their Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We album on vinyl — so good! Alex and I chose Dreams for our closing song at our wedding and it was a solid ender.
It’s also been a canned fish and chili crisp summer in our house. Sometimes together and sometimes not. My personal fave chili crisp is the S&B Crunchy Garlic Chili Crisp or Fly By Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp. There are about 1000 others but I gravitate towards those two the most. And tuna salad sandwiches are the best lunch for a hot day.
I’ve been absolutely obsessed with making jewelry lately. I think with everything going on, I needed to have a quick lil craft project just for me and beading is it!! Here are some of the things I’ve made:
