Happy Friday y’all!
It’s the last day of January and as promised, Yolker is here! I am quite proud of my little eggy guy! The process was quite smooth outside of a small website hiccup this morning. But thanks to Tom at Fontdue, we’re back in business!
Yolker’s development began back in 2021 as part of the 52 Fonts Project! If you’ve been here since then, you have my love forever!! The idea came to me in a lightbulb moment right before drifting off to sleep. It seems to be when my best ideas pop into my head. I am also a better writer when I write before bed instead of during the work day. I don’t know what that says about me but here we are!
The idea behind Yolker was to emulate a freshly cracked egg, plopped into a frying pan! To turn that concept into letters, I took a bit of a cartoonish approach to the forms. Lots of big smooth curves, with no counters or straight lines (so long as I can help it!). In the Yolks style, the yolk can act as a counter of sorts although there’s one with every letter. Some people have complained that B doesn’t have two yolks but I’m sorry to report that it looks weird!! Plus it’s not really a counter, so giving B two yolks would confuse the whole concept. Call me crazy, but it’s extremely important to me to adhere whole-heartedly to a concept. Otherwise what is the point?!
Yolker has transformed since the original release. It’s become narrower, more symmetrical, and more cohesive overall. It’s been a balance between “what would an egg do?” versus “what makes sense for a functioning typeface?” (Should we make W.W.A.E.D. rubber bracelets??) And of course, legibility in such a weirdly blobby typeface is a big concern! I am quite happy with where it’s landed and I am excited to (hopefully) see others use it!
Yolker has four styles: Yolks, Yolks Outline, Yolkless, and Yolkless Outline. Designed with novelty AND usability in mind. Consider it your go-to font for novelty tees, diner menus, and truly anything breakfast themed!
As a token of my appreciation, please use the code CHEAPERBYTHEDOZEN for 20% off Yolker until Monday, February 3rd!
Speaking of using Yolker, I made a little printed specimen for it! It comes in the form of a fake diner menu. The Grade A Cafe, if you will! I used Yolker for the whole thing to show how strangely versatile it can be. It looks great sized extra large at the top of the menu and even works for the disclaimer text at the bottom. If you’d like a copy, they’re for sale for $10 (includes shipping [even for international folks!!])! It even comes with a fun TYPOGRAPHIC EGGCELLENCE sticker. Click the button below to snag a copy!
Thank you so much for being here and for you’re never ending support. I couldn’t do this without you! <3
Have an eggcellent weekend,
Libbie
So proud of you!!! It looks so so good! And makes me hungry for brunch...
YOLKER LIVES!!!
